Introduction to the Policy Statements

Human Rights are rights believed to belong to every person. These include the right to life and liberty, the freedom of expression, thought, religion, expression and opinion, equal treatment before the law, the freedom from slavery and torture, the right to education, privacy, being able to work and generate an income, to marry and have a family to mention a few. These basic rights are reflected in values such as dignity, fairness, equality, respect, and independence (/). These rights and values are universal and inalienable as much as they are interdependent and interrelated (Universal Declaration of Human Rights link) resources.

As a responsible and compliant business entity with our Head Office in South Africa and working with clients across the world, JVR is driven by the pursuit of ethical behaviour and values, transparency, congruency, and operational excellence. The respect for Human Rights, is essential to all the work done by JVR.

This JVR Africa Group policy statement on Human Rights is regularly evaluated for compliance and readopted on 1 December 2021.

Points of Departure for the Policy Statement

The JVR Africa Group of Companies state the following as points of departure for this Human Rights Policy Statement:

  1. Adherence to the fundamental rights and values contained in the Bill of Rights in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (hereafter Constitution) link and the International Bill of Human Rights formulated by the UN General Assembly Resolution 217A (III) link and the two additional international treaties established by the United Nations /

  2. That these fundamental values and rights are respected and upheld by all employees in the Group and in each of the companies within the JVR Africa Group.

  3. 3. That these fundamental rights and values are not viewed in isolation but applied as an integral part of all our company practices and policies.


Objectives of the JVR Human Rights Policy Statement is to:

  1. Continuously model, promote, and reinforce a culture of human rights in all the work we do and our observance, respect, and protection thereof in all circumstances.

  2. Monitor and assess the compliance with human rights in the JVR companies and the broader JVR community.

  3. Constantly ensure that the JVR Africa regulatory and policy framework is aligned with the promotion of human rights within the framework of the Law and the Constitution.

  4. Investigate any alleged violation of human rights within the JVR Africa community and assist any person adversely affected thereby to secure redress.

Scope and Application

The policy is applicable to all permanent and contracted employees of the JVR Africa Group, as well as the service providers contracted by the JVR Companies.

Guiding Principles

The Human Rights Policy is guided by the following documents, values, and principles:

  1. The Constitution.

  2. The values contained in the Constitution, e.g., the democratic values of human dignity, equality, and freedom.

  3. Subsidiary legislation enacted in terms of the Constitution, e.g., the Promotion of Access to Information Act No. 2 of 2000, the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act No. 3 of 2000, the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act No. 4 of 2000 link, and the Protection of Personal Information Act No. 4 of 2013.

  4. Constitutional Court rulings and other relevant jurisprudence on human rights.

  5. South African Human Rights Commission decisions, publications, and policy documents.

  6. International and domestic documents and commentaries on human rights, as far as these are not in conflict with the Constitution or subsidiary legislation.

Governance, Management Roles, and Accountabilities

The JVR Africa Group’s Board of Directors is responsible for the following to govern adherence to the Human Rights Policy Statement:

  1. The monitoring and the implementation of the Human Rights Policy Statement.

  2. Ensure that human rights related activities and responsibilities in the JVR Africa Group are carried out in good faith and without fear, favour, bias, or prejudice.

  3. Ensure recognition of representativity within the JVR Africa Group and the community, and be in all actions sensitive to race, gender, disability, and other forms of marginalised and/or disadvantaged persons.
